About Us

Sex Addicts Anonymous

As a fellowship of recovering addicts, Sex Addicts Anonymous® offers a message of hope to anyone who suffers from sex addiction.

Through long and painful experience, we came to realize that our compulsive preoccupation with sex was causing severe adverse consequences for us, our families, and our friends, and was causing our lives to become unmanageable. Despite many failed promises to ourselves and others, and despite repeated and determined attempts to change, we discovered that we were unable to stop acting out sexually by ourselves.

Many of us came to this realization when we started attending SAA meetings. In that setting we heard stories similar to ours and realized that recovery from our problem was possible. We learned through the SAA Fellowship that we were not hopelessly defective.

Sex Addicts Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other, that they may solve their common problem and help others recover from sexual addiction. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop compulsive sexual behavior. There are no dues or fees for SAA membership, we are fully self-supporting through our own contributions. Sex Addicts Anonymous is not allied with any sect, denomination, political organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Sex Addicts Anonymous is not sex therapy or group therapy. Its primary purpose is to achieve abstinence from compulsive sexual behaviors and to help other sex addicts become abstinent.

The basic principles of recovery practiced by SAA are found in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. Although we are not affiliated with Alcoholics Anonymous or with any other organization or agency, we are, indeed, grateful for permission to modify and apply the AA Steps and Traditions to sex addiction, making recovery possible for us.

SAA Groups

In SAA, sex addicts meet on a regular basis, in small to medium-sized groups, to work on their recovery based on the Twelve Steps. If you think you might be a sex addict and want to seek recovery based on the principles of SAA, you are welcome to any meeting (even those labeled “closed” are open to you). Meetings are listed in the meeting guide. If there are no meetings in your area, you might consider forming your own meeting; the SAA Group Guide contains suggestions for this.

The Southern California Intergroup of SAA

The local Intergroup is comprised of representatives from SAA groups throughout Southern California. The general purpose is to pool funds to more effectively reach out to sex addicts, operate committees to organize outreach, plan local events, establish local policies, provide a forum where groups can network with other groups, exchange meeting information, and discuss information about fellowship-wide issues. The Intergroup meets on a monthly basis (meeting info). Intergroup meetings are open to all members, but only elected representatives or designated alternates may vote.
